Gangwon is mountain country, crossed north to south by the Taebaek range. Around Daegwallyeong in Pyeongchang the land sits at about 700 metres, so it stays cool even in summer, and pastures run along the ridgelines. For students who grew up in cities, it is a different face of Korea.
The 2018 Winter Olympics were held in Pyeongchang and the venues remain in the region. Walking that legacy is itself a look at a recent chapter of Korean history. The local food culture — buckwheat and mountain greens — also comes from this altitude and climate.
It is quiet and sparsely populated, which suits intensive Korean study. What you learn in class you can try out in the village the same day.
